Benefits of the HL | 1622
- These mobile shredding systems are specially designed to shred material such as garbage, bulky waste, as well as mixed construction waste and waste wood.
- The feed material is fed via the hopper to the crusher shafts, which slowly converge.
- The slow-running crushing plants are manufactured in different sizes and are each equipped according to the application.
- The areas of mobile use and stationary use are completely covered. The drive here is possible either via a diesel engine or an electric drive.
- At the customer's request, Smart Waste also innovatively plans and implements special systems, including in the form of complete system lines as a complete project, on the basis of a fair price-performance ratio.

FAQ for Two Shaft Shredder HL 1622: Commercial FAQs & High-Torque Engineering Guide
The Two Shaft Shredder HL 1622 is a heavy-duty, dual-rotor size-reduction machine engineered for aggressive shearing, tearing, and volume reduction of high-density commercial, industrial, and municipal waste streams.
Built around a heavy-duty cutting chamber with approximately 1,600 mm diameter rotor swing envelopes and a 2,200 mm active cutting chamber width, the HL 1622 utilizes two parallel counter-rotating shafts fitted with interlocking hook-profile cutting discs. Operating at low speeds with extreme torque, it is designed to process bulky, solid, and irregular waste materials that cause jamming in conventional single-rotor systems.
- Cutting Chamber Dimensions: Approx. 1,600 mm rotor swing clearance × 2,200 mm active cutting length.
- Drive Configuration: Twin electric motors coupled with heavy industrial planetary gearboxes, or a continuous-displacement high-pressure hydraulic drive system.
- Drive Power Rating: Typically, dual 75 kW to 110 kW electric drive motors (totaling 150 kW to 220 kW of installed power).
- Shaft Operating Speed: Low-speed operation between 15 RPM and 35 RPM for maximum shearing torque.
- Cutting Knives: High-tensile, heat-treated alloy tool steel discs (e.g., 42CrMo, D2, or Hardox) available in customizable blade widths (typically 30 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, or 100 mm).
- Machine Operating Weight: Approx. 18,000 kg to 26,000 kg heavy fabricated steel structure.
Unlike single shaft shredders that rely on an internal hydraulic pusher ram to press material against a high-speed rotor, the HL 1622 is completely self-feeding:
- Inward Counter-Rotation: The two parallel shafts rotate inward toward the center of the cutting bed.
- Hook-Jaw Engagement: Interlocking, multi-toothed hook blades grab incoming bulk waste with high mechanical grip.
- Gravitational Draw: The opposing hook geometry continually pulls bulky materials downward into the cutting gap, eliminating the maintenance, hydraulic lines, and cycle delays associated with internal pusher rams.
The HL 1622 is engineered for the toughest non-homogeneous commercial and municipal waste streams:
- Metal Scrap & Barrels: 200-liter (55-gallon) steel oil drums, sheet metal offcuts, aluminium extrusions, and light stamping scrap.
- End-of-Life Tires (ELTs): Passenger vehicle tires, 4WD tires, truck tire treads, and heavy rubber belting.
- Bulky & Rigid Plastics: Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC totes), heavy plastic drums, thick-walled purge blocks, rotationally molded tanks, and HDPE pipes.
- Electronic & Whitegoods Waste (WEEE): Refrigerators, commercial air conditioning units, washing machines, server chassis, and mixed electronic scrap.
- Municipal & Bulky Landfill Refuse: Mattresses, domestic furniture, timber shipping pallets, carpets, and municipal solid waste (MSW).
Because the HL 1622 operates without a restrictive bottom classification screen to maximize throughput and prevent blinding, the discharge profile consists of shredded strips and torn fragments:
- Strip Width: Controlled by the thickness of the installed cutting discs (e.g., 50 mm discs produce nominal 50 mm wide strips).
- Particle Length: Determined by the number of hooks on each blade disc and the rotational speed ratio between the two shafts.
- Primary Pre-Shredding Role: Serves as the primary size-reduction stage in multi-phase plants, delivering calibrated feeds to downstream hammer mills, granulators, or magnetic separators.
Large, hollow industrial goods like barrels, IBC totes, and furniture waste occupy massive transport volume while contributing minimal weight:
- Dramatic Volume Densification: Achieves volume reduction ratios between 4:1 and 8:1, eliminating empty voids and collapsing hollow structures.
- Payload Maximization: Ensures road-haulage trailers and RoRo compactor bins hit maximum legal axle weight limits on every trip, lowering haulage frequencies by up to 70%.
- Wear Reduction on Secondary Machinery: Processing bulky waste through the HL 1622 prevents catastrophic damage to high-speed secondary granulators and conveyor sorting belts.
The HL 1622 features advanced PLC-controlled overload intelligence:
- Integrated current and pressure transducers continuously monitor motor amperage or hydraulic line pressure.
- When an uncrushable object (such as heavy tramp structural steel or an oversized axle) enters the chamber, torque spikes instantly.
- The system stops both shafts within a fraction of a revolution and initiates an automated reverse cycle for 2 to 4 rotations to reposition the material.
- The shafts then re-engage forward rotation automatically. If the jam persists after three automated attempts, the system safely stops the motor and alerts facility personnel via visual beacon and telemetry alarms.
The machine complies with Australian Machine Safety Standards (AS/NZS 4024):
- Dual-Channel Interlocked Access Hatches: Hydraulic maintenance inspection doors and hopper access points are fitted with safety interlocks that physically prevent shaft rotation while open.
- Heavy-Duty Internal Deflector Curtains: Multi-layered rubber and chain curtains inside the feed hopper prevent high-velocity material ejection during the shearing of pressurized drums or resilient plastics.
- Trapped-Key (Castell) Interlock Systems: Ensures main electrical isolator switches are physically locked out before service personnel can open access doors.
- Full-Perimeter Emergency Stops: Dual-circuit mushroom E-stops positioned at the main control station, infeed loading mezzanine, and discharge conveyor transition points.
- Cleaning Comb Alignment: Routine inspection of the internal scraper fingers positioned between cutting discs. Keeping scrapers aligned prevents wire, strapping, and flexible films from wrapping around the shafts.
- Cutting Blade Hook Care: Inspecting blade cutting edges for rounding. The HL 1622 features modular, independently replaceable discs, allowing individual worn blades to be replaced or re-profiled with hard-facing weld without replacing entire shaft assemblies.
- Planetary Gearbox Servicing: Monitoring synthetic gear oil condition, sampling fluid for metal particulates, and performing fluid changes at scheduled intervals.
- Labyrinth Seal & Bearing Greasing: Regularly purging external bearing blocks with high-temperature, extreme-pressure grease to block dust, fine grit, and leachate ingress. Smart Waste Australia provides comprehensive scheduled service agreements, genuine replacement cutting tooling, and emergency nationwide repair coverage.
