Benefits of the HL | 1722
- These mobile shredding systems are specially designed to shred material such as garbage, bulky waste, as well as mixed construction waste and waste wood.
- The feed material is fed via the hopper to the crusher shafts, which slowly converge.
- The slow-running crushing plants are manufactured in different sizes and are each equipped according to the application.
- The areas of mobile use and stationary use are completely covered. The drive here is possible either via a diesel engine or an electric drive.
- At the customer's request, Smart Waste also innovatively plans and implements special systems, including in the form of complete system lines as a complete project, on the basis of a fair price-performance ratio.

FAQ for Two Shaft Shredder HL 1722: Industrial FAQs & High-Capacity Engineering Guide
The Two Shaft Shredder HL 1722 is an ultra-heavy-duty dual-rotor industrial shredder engineered for high-throughput primary size reduction of dense, bulky, and abrasive waste materials.
Featuring an enlarged cutting chamber with an approximate 1,700 mm rotor swing diameter and a 2,200 mm active cutting bed width, the HL 1722 combines the wide-hopper intake of extended models with a deeper, higher-torque rotor profile. It utilizes two parallel counter-rotating hexagonal shafts fitted with interlocking hook-profile alloy discs to crush, shear, and rip massive non-homogeneous waste streams without material bridging or feed stalling.
- Cutting Chamber Dimensions: Approx. 1,700 mm rotor swing diameter × 2,200 mm active cutting length.
- Drive Configuration: Dual high-torque industrial electric motors coupled with multi-stage planetary gearboxes, or a continuous-displacement high-pressure hydraulic drive pack.
- Drive Power Rating: Typically, dual 90 kW to 132 kW electric motors (totaling 180 kW to 264+ kW of installed power).
- Shaft Operating Speed: Ultra-low-speed operation between 12 RPM and 30 RPM delivering maximum shearing torque per tooth.
- Cutting Discs: Wear-resistant, heat-treated alloy tool steel blades (e.g., 42CrMo, D2, or Hardox) available in customizable blade thicknesses (typically 40 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, or 100 mm).
- Machine Weight: Approx. 22,000 kg to 30,000 kg structural steel frame.
- Larger Rotor Swing (1,700 mm vs. 1,600 mm): The increased rotor radius provides a deeper cutting bite and higher rotational torque, allowing it to grab and pull down oversized cylindrical objects like large plastic tanks and thick steel drums more aggressively.
- Higher Installed Drive Power: Supporting up to 264+ kW of total motor power, the HL 1722 delivers greater sustained cutting force than the HL 1622 (up to 220 kW) and the HL 1617 (up to 180 kW).
- Heavy-Duty Bearing & Shaft Core: Features larger-diameter hexagonal shafts and oversized spherical roller bearings engineered to absorb severe radial impact shocks from dense baled or metallic scrap.
- Deep Chamber In-Feed: The combination of a 1.7 m swing and 2.2 m bed width accommodates direct feeding of complete bulk packages and high-volume grapple loads.
The HL 1722 is built for high-tonnage primary reduction across tough commercial, municipal, and industrial streams:
- Heavy-Gauge Metal Scrap: 200-liter steel drums, automotive body panels, sheet metal pressings, light vehicle chassis sections, and aluminium profiles.
- End-of-Life Tires (ELTs): Passenger car, SUV, agricultural, and heavy commercial truck tires with bead wire.
- Bulky & High-Density Polymers: Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBC totes), rotationally molded storage tanks, thick injection purgings, and extruded HDPE pipes.
- Baled & Compressed Materials: Tightly baled cardboard, compressed agricultural film rolls, and woven bulk bags (FIBCs).
- E-Waste & Bulky Municipal Waste: Commercial refrigeration units, household whitegoods, server cabinets, mattresses, timber pallets, and mixed Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).
Because the HL 1722 operates without a bottom classifier screen to maintain high throughput and prevent clogging:
- Strip Width: Determined by the thickness of the installed cutting discs (e.g., 50 mm wide discs produce nominal 50 mm strips; 75 mm discs produce 75 mm strips).
- Particle Length: Regulated by the hook profile, number of teeth per disc, and the rotational speed differential between the twin shafts.
- Downstream Sizing: The sheared fragments discharge freely through the open base onto an outfeed conveyor, ready for magnetic overband ferrous separation, eddy current sorting, or secondary granulators.
Processing bulky, rigid waste through the HL 1722 provides immediate operational savings:
- High-Ratio Volume Reduction: Delivers compaction and shredding ratios between 5:1 and 8:1, eliminating void air space in hollow barrels, tanks, and furniture.
- Payload Optimization: Ensures highway trailers and RoRo transport containers reach maximum legal weight capacity on every run, reducing transport trips by up to 75%.
- Downstream Protection: Acts as a primary pre-shredder to safeguard high-speed secondary hammer mills and granulators from catastrophic shock loads caused by uncrushable pieces.
To protect drive lines from uncrushable tramp metals and massive shock loads:
- High-precision current transducers and hydraulic pressure sensors monitor motor load in milliseconds.
- If an uncrushable object causes torque to spike beyond calibrated safety thresholds, the PLC halts both shafts in a fraction of a second.
- The shafts immediately reverse rotation for 2 to 4 turns to reposition or expel the material before automatically returning to forward cutting.
- If the obstruction cannot be cleared after three automated reverse cycles, the system locks out and trips visual beacon and audible alarms to prevent shaft or gearbox fracture.
The machine complies with Australian Machine Safety Standards (AS/NZS 4024):
- Dual-Channel Interlocked Safety Hatches: Hydraulic maintenance inspection doors and hopper access points feature safety interlocks that disable all hydraulic and electrical power when opened.
- Internal Deflector Curtains: Heavy multi-layer rubber and chain curtains inside the feed hopper prevent material kickback during the crushing of pressurized drums or resilient plastics.
- Trapped-Key (Castell) Lockout Systems: Ensures maintenance technicians physically isolate and lock out main electrical isolators before entering the hopper or cutter bed.
- Multi-Point Emergency Stops: Strategically located mushroom E-stop buttons positioned on the operator control desk, loading mezzanines, and discharge conveyors.
- Cleaning Comb Alignment: Regularly inspecting the internal scraper combs mounted between cutting discs to prevent wire, strapping, and flexible plastic films from wrapping around the shafts.
- Cutting Hook Maintenance: Inspecting knife hook profiles for rounding or wear. Modular cutting discs can be individually replaced or re-profiled with hard-facing weld without replacing entire shaft assemblies.
- Planetary Gearbox Servicing: Monitoring synthetic gear oil condition, sampling fluid for metallic contamination, and adhering to scheduled 1,000-to-2,000-hour fluid service intervals.
- Labyrinth Seal & Bearing Lubrication: Purging external bearing housings with high-temperature, extreme-pressure grease regularly to block dust, fine grit, and leachate ingress. Smart Waste Australia provides nationwide preventative maintenance agreements, genuine replacement cutting tooling, and emergency on-site field support.
