Short Static Compactors Detail's

The ratio between the total length and the huge size of the filling opening is the
outstanding advantage of these compactors.
High compaction force and the easily maintainable and robust design of the short
compactors contribute to the excellent performance of the machines.

Short compactors are available with different filling opening sizes and can be combined
with roll on – roll off containers.
Models equipped with a hydraulic door closing device to be used with special containers
are also available.

FAQ for Short Static Compactors: Commercial FAQs & Space-Saving Solutions

A short static compactor is a specialized, ultra-compact stationary waste compactor engineered specifically for sites with tight spatial footprints. While standard static compactors require extensive run lengths to house the hydraulic cylinders behind the charge box, short static units utilize a truncated body design often incorporating cross-cylinder (scissor-style) hydraulic rams or shortened stroke cylinders. This reduces the total machine depth by 30% to 50% without compromising the high compaction tonnage, robust frame strength, or ability to clamp to large, separate roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) containers.

Conventional linear compactors require a long structural tail frame because the hydraulic cylinder extends directly behind the ram plate. Short static compactors overcome this by using:

  • Cross-Cylinder Geometry (Scissor Hydraulics): Twin cylinders are mounted diagonally in an intersecting, overlapping layout. When extending, they push outward simultaneously, delivering full stroke length within a chassis nearly half the standard depth.
  • Telescopic Hydraulic Rams: Multi-stage nested cylinder rods that extend out to full stroke length while collapsing into a compact retracted housing.
  • High-Pressure Hydraulic Systems: Operating at higher hydraulic circuit pressures (up to 200–250 bar) to generate 30 to 40 tonnes of pressing force from more compact cylinder bores.

Short static compactors excel at compacting high-volume, low-density dry commercial and industrial (C&I) waste:

  • Bulky Packaging & Corrugated Cardboard: High-volume shipping boxes, cardboard packaging, and packaging paper.
  • Flexible Packaging & Stretch Wrap: LDPE pallet wrap, plastic banding, foam corner protectors, and bubble wrap.
  • Dry Commercial Mixed Waste: Non-perishable general retail refuse, paper waste, textiles, and dry assembly offcuts.
  • Light Crating Materials: Particle board packaging, light timber slats, and disposable pallets.

These units are specifically engineered for locations where installation space or access turning circles are limited:

  • CBD Commercial Office Towers: Basements where vehicle manoeuvring space is at a premium and structural columns restrict equipment footprint.
  • Inner-City Shopping Centres: Tight subterranean loading docks where every meter of floor space is required for delivery truck circulation.
  • Hospital Loading Bays: Facilities needing high-capacity dry packaging compaction without obstructing emergency or service corridors.
  • Urban Logistics & Fulfillment Hubs: Facilities with limited yard boundaries that must maximize container capacity while fitting equipment inside narrow bays.

To accommodate diverse architectural layouts, short static compactors offer flexible loading options:

  • Wall-Mounted Internal Chutes: Waste drops directly from an internal disposal room or floor-level sorting room straight into the external compactor hopper.
  • Integrated Hydraulic Wheelie Bin Tippers: Side- or front-mounted hydraulic lifters engineered to lift and empty 120 L, 240 L, 660 L, or 1,100 L MGB bins safely.
  • Low-Profile Enclosed Hoppers: Hopper lids fitted with counterbalanced gas struts or automated pneumatic opening doors for fast manual loading from dock level.

Short static compactors comply with Australian Machinery Safety Standard AS/NZS 4024:

  • Safety Light Curtains & Interlocked Cages: Instantly halts hydraulic motion if personnel breach the loading hopper safety perimeter during operation.
  • Container Docking Proximity Interlocks: Electrical safety sensors ensure the compactor ram cannot cycle unless a receiver container is clamped and secured to the press face.
  • Emergency Stop Circuits: Prominently positioned mushroom E-stop buttons located on the operator control panel and remote wall pendants.
  • Cross-Cylinder Guarding: Protective steel shrouds prevent pinch-point hazards across the intersecting hydraulic scissor rams.

Installing a short static compactor requires:

  • Concrete Hardstand: A level, reinforced concrete foundation slab (minimum 150 mm thick, 32 MPa) capable of handling anchor bolt tension and full container weights.
  • Container Guide Rails: Ground-mounted steel guide rails to ensure transport trucks align detachable containers with the compact press head.
  • Power Supply: A dedicated 400 V, 3-phase, 50 Hz industrial power drop with a 16 A or 32 A lockable rotary isolator adjacent to the power pack.

Due to the unique angular forces of compact scissor cylinders:

  • Pivot Pin & Bushing Greasing: Regular greasing of cylinder trunnion pins and scissor articulation bearings to minimize mechanical wear.
  • Hydraulic Hose Abrasion Checks: Inspecting flexible hydraulic hoses for routing clearance and wear during scissor extension.
  • Guide Pad Wear Monitoring: Checking ram bottom and side synthetic wear strips (UHMW-PE) to ensure smooth travel without scoring the steel floor. Smart Waste Australia provides nationwide scheduled preventative servicing, hydraulic health checks, and breakdown repairs.
