Benefits of the HFZ V - Fine Shredder
- The Husmann company has developed a mobile or stationary system of the HFZ type specifically for the fine shredding of wood waste. This means we are able to produce a very fine output material.
- The machines can be manufactured individually according to customer requirements.
- The pre-shredded and metal-free feed material is fed to the hopper and the rotor via a short feed belt. The material is then shredded using the high-speed rotor with oscillating flail hammers and an adjustable counter-blade.
- The fraction size can be adjusted using screwed and quickly changeable sieve inserts.
- The finely chopped material is used for combustion, pelletizing or briquetting.

FAQ for Industrial Large Shredder HFZ V: Fine Shredder FAQs & Calibrated Biomass Guide
The Large Shredder HFZ V is an industrial-scale secondary fine shredder specifically engineered to convert pre-shredded timber, green waste, pallets, and industrial residues into a homogeneous, precisely calibrated fine fraction.
Unlike the HFG series, which uses high-speed free-swinging flail hammers for coarse defibration and initial volume reduction, the HFZ V functions as a precision secondary machine. Operating with rigid or semi-fixed cutter profiles and an interchangeable internal sizing basket screen, it produces exact particle dimensions (typically 10 mm to 50 mm) required for high-grade biomass pellets, briquettes, particleboard manufacturing, and fluidized-bed bio-energy combustion.
- HFZ (High-Speed Fine / Secondary Shredder): Identifies the secondary fine-grinding architecture designed to operate downstream of primary coarse shredders.
- Precision Particle Classification: Signifies the machine’s focus on tight particle size distribution, utilizing internal radial classification screens rather than open gravity discharge.
- Rotor Assembly: Precision-machined, high-speed secondary rotor fitted with hardened, indexable or replaceable cutting tools and counter-knives.
- Drive Power Rating: High-efficiency industrial electric drive or high-output diesel engine delivering 300 kW to 450+ kW (approx. 400 HP to 600+ HP) of continuous operational power.
- Sizing Screen System: Hydraulically hinged, interchangeable bottom screen baskets with round, square, or slotted apertures ranging from 10 mm to 60 mm.
- Infeed Geometry: Enclosed, controlled infeed hopper designed for continuous conveyor or vibrating feeder loading from an upstream primary shredder or screening deck.
- Throughput Capacity: Continuous high-tonnage output delivering 15 to 40+ tonnes per hour (subject to screen aperture diameter and moisture content).
- Mobility / Chassis: Stationary skid-mounted plant integration or heavy-duty semi-trailer chassis with integrated discharge belt options.
Operational Parameter | HFG Series (e.g., HFG V LS) | HFZ V (Fine Shredder) |
Process Role | Primary shredder / high-speed hammer mill | Secondary fine shredder / finishing mill |
Rotor Tooling | Free-swinging flail hammers | Rigid / semi-fixed precision cutting tools |
Screen Classification | Screenless breaker comb (open discharge) | Enclosed interchangeable bottom sizing screens |
Output Profile | Frayed, fibrous, coarse mulch and biomass | Uniform, calibrated micro-chips or fine sawdust-like fractions |
Feed Material | Whole logs, root balls, un-shredded brush, pallets | Pre-shredded timber, coarse chips, de-ironed wood waste |
The HFZ V is optimized for clean, pre-shredded, and de-ironed industrial timber and organic streams:
- Pre-Shredded Wood Waste: Primary shreds from HFG hammer mills or two-shaft shredders requiring secondary sizing.
- Discarded Pallets & Packaging Timber: Pre-crushed shipping pallets, crates, and untreated dunnage with tramp nails removed by upstream magnetic separators.
- Sawmill Residues: Offcuts, wood shavings, clean slab timber, and dry wood chips.
- Particleboard & MDF Production Residue: Clean joinery scrap, untreated furniture offcuts, and veneer trimmings.
- Agricultural Residues: Straw bales, bagasse, and crop stalks for animal bedding or densified fuel briquettes.
The calibrated fraction produced by the HFZ V serves several high-value commercial sectors:
- Pelletizing & Briquetting Plants: Delivers a fine, uniform feedstock that compresses easily into high-energy wood pellets and fuel briquettes without bridging feed screws.
- Fluidized-Bed Bio-Energy Boilers: Produces consistent fuel chips that ignite with maximum thermal efficiency and low emissions in commercial combined heat and power (CHP) installations.
- Wood-Plastic Composites (WPC) & MDF: Supplies dimensioned wood fibers for composite decking, fiberboard manufacturing, and engineered wood paneling.
- Animal Bedding & Horticultural Substrates: Generates clean, splinter-free, absorbent bedding material for equine and poultry facilities.
Because fine shredders run at tight knife-to-screen clearances, foreign object protection is vital:
- Upstream Integration: Typically paired with overband cross-belt magnets and eddy-current separators on the infeed conveyor to remove ferrous and non-ferrous metals before they reach the chamber.
- High-Speed Rotor Reversing: The electronic PLC monitors drive current continuously. A sudden resistance spike triggers an immediate deceleration and reverse sequence to prevent cutter fracture.
- Modular Safety Anvil Release: If an uncrushable piece passes the rotor, mechanical shear pins or hydraulic relief valves allow the counter-knife anvil to drop, discharging the foreign body safely into a trap.
The machinery complies with Australian Machine Safety Standards (AS/NZS 4024):
- Interlocked Hydraulic Screen Cradle: Dual-channel safety limit switches ensure the rotor cannot be engaged while the screen cradle or hood is open for maintenance.
- Trapped-Key (Castell) Isolators: Requires physical isolation and lockout of high-voltage electrical cabinets before maintenance doors can be unlocked.
- Automated Spark Detection & Deluge Systems: Integrated infrared optical sensors detect hot friction sparks in the discharge duct, triggering high-speed extinguishing water mist within milliseconds.
- Emergency Stop Networking: Dual-channel mushroom emergency stop buttons situated at operator consoles, loading walkways, and conveyor transfer points.
- Screen Basket Inspection: Regularly inspect sizing screens for aperture wear or bending, replacing worn screens to maintain precise output particle boundaries.
- Cutter Rotation & Flipping: The precision cutting tools are multi-edged and indexable; systematically rotate tools to present fresh sharp edges and preserve dynamic rotor balance.
- Counter-Knife Calibration: Check and adjust the gap between the rotor cutters and the stationary counter-anvil (typically 1.0 mm to 2.5 mm) to ensure a clean shear cut and minimize energy consumption.
- Rotor Bearing Greasing: Maintain automated lubrication reservoirs supplying high-pressure synthetic grease to heavy-duty spherical roller pillow blocks. Smart Waste Australia provides nationwide scheduled maintenance agreements, precision wear parts, and complete processing plant integration.
